The Spirit of Christmas in Southeast Portland

Let’s do a draw of hands! What is your favorite part of the holiday season?
The lights and decorations?
Christmas PJs?
Fresh-out-of-the-oven cookies?
Spending time with loved ones?
Christmas movies? (My favorite is The Family Stone)
Well deserved time-off?
Mine might be all of the perfect excuses not to leave my favorite quadrant of the city. Some of Portland’s most iconic Christmas “must-dos” are right here in my SE backyard! From tree lots to new traditions, there’s no reason to drive far to have the most magical holiday season. Read on for a whole lot of SE PDX holiday cheer.

Christmas Tree Lots

It’s not too late! You still have time to get a gorgeous tree before Christmas Eve.
Scout Tree Lot – SE Powell Blvd
Red Shed Christmas Trees – SE 78th Ave
Montavilla Tree Lot – SE Washington St

Boutique Shopping – Cross Everyone Off Your List

Birds and Bees Nursery – SE 50th Ave
A favorite of mine! Fantastic selection of indoor and outdoor plants, as well as handmade pots.

Mother Foucault’s Bookshop – SE Morrison St
There is something at Mother Foucault’s Bookstore for the bookworms, creative minds, cooks, green thumbs, and well… everyone in your life. From floor to ceiling, the store is practically overflowing with books and trinkets.
Cargo – SE Yamhill St
Owners of Cargo feature artists and craftsmen from around the world, with the goal of uplifting artists and sustaining endangered traditions.

Rejuvenation– SE Grand Ave
Don’t get lost! Rejuvenation is a 10,000 square foot store packed with restored antiques, decor, and pop-up art by local artists.

Holiday Events

Nutcracker, The Oregon Ballet Theatre – SW Clay St
December 11 – 26
A short offshoot from SE Portland, but I couldn’t go without including the Oregon Ballet Theatre! Per tradition, the OBT is performing the Nutcracker at the Keller Auditorium with a live orchestra. Tickets are still available here.
Holiday Express, Oaks Park – SE Oaks Park Way
November 26 – December 19
Great Christmas outing for the little ones. A steam engine train runs from Oaks Park, though the Wildlife Refuge, and to the Springwater Trail gateway in a loop. Santa and his elves roam the carts throughout the ride!
Drive-by Christmas on the Campground – SE Duke St
November 25 – December 31
Swing by the Apostolic Faith Campground one evening and check out their light display. If you want to make an event of it, brew some tea, and take a stroll through the park!
Peacock Lane, Light Display – SE Peacock Ln
December 15 – 31
A Portland classic Christmas event. The residential street, Peacock Lane, is decorated to the nines each year and has become a destination for locals to walk, drive, and even ride a horse-drawn carriage through!
Lents Holiday Pop-up Market – SE Foster Rd
December 18 & 19
This year, a community-organized pop-up market is coming to the (now closed) Lent Commons Coffee Shop. Shop for gifts from local vendors, snack, sip, and enjoy live music from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm. If you want to keep the party going, event organizers are hosting an after-party at  Zoiglhaus Brewing Company from 7:00 to 11:00 pm!

Seasonal Sips

Once a year these breweries, wineries, and cocktail bars serve holiday themed drinks. Get them while they’re hot (or… cold)!
The Winter Sage from Cascade Brewing House – SE Belmont St
Sour wheat ale, infused with locally grown sage, white tea, coriander, lemon peel, and sea salt from the Oregon coast!
Yippee-Ki-PA from Baerlic Brewing – SE 11th Ave
Balanced blend of pine and malty-sweetness!
Winter Season Grzaniec from Threshold Beer – SE 79th Ave
Have you ever had a hot mulled beer? Threshold bartenders heat their grisette beer with a cinnamon stick, cloves, cardamon, and orange peels.
Holiday Sangria at Hip Chicks Do Wine – SE 23th Ave
Visit the amazing staff at Hip Chicks Do Wine for their Holiday Open House Event for a $20 wine tasting and a glass of their signature holiday sangria!
Bad Santa from Deadshot – SE 11th Ave
Mixologists at Deadshot have reinvented the hot buttered rum with oak milk and Velvet Falernum, with soft notes of lime, almonds, and cloves. Sounds amazing!
